Pennsylvania state senators are moving forward with a proposal to ban the use of credit cards in betting.
Led by Senator Wayne D Fontana of the Democratic Party, the bill aims to restrict the use of credit cards in sports betting, daily fantasy contests, lotteries and online casino payments in the state.
The motivation behind this legislation is to combat problem gambling in Pennsylvania. This happened because the growth of the online betting and gaming market in the state intensified.
Credit card ban for betting
Then, since the repeal of PASPA in 2018, Pennsylvania became one of the first states to legalize these activities. Consequently, there has been an increase in cases of gambling-related problems.
Fontana’s proposal coincides with National Problem Gambling Awareness Month. Thus, the date seeks to increase information about the harm caused by gambling and provide resources for those who need help.
The initiative also aims to alert other legislators about the importance of regulating betting responsibly.
Therefore, if the proposed legislation is approved, Pennsylvania would join states such as Iowa, Tennessee and Massachusetts, which have already banned the use of credit cards to finance gambling.
In Iowa, for example, Senator Tony Bisignano justified the decision by saying that using credit cards could lead people to incur unsustainable debt.
Other countries are adopting similar measures
Gaming operators in Pennsylvania, one of the largest gambling markets in the US, should pay close attention to these developments.
In states where the ban is already in effect, such as Massachusetts and Tennessee, betting operators have faced fines and actions for violating the legislation.
In any case, the United States is not alone in this measure. The UK banned the use of credit cards for gambling in 2019, while Sweden is considering implementing similar laws.
In Australia, a federal legislative reform campaign is underway to ban credit card payments in gambling.
Therefore, these measures reflect a growing concern about the negative effects of excessive gambling and the need to protect vulnerable gamblers.
