New bill aims to legalize online and retail sports betting in Florida

The Florida House of Representatives is considering a new bill that aims to legalize online and retail sports betting in the US state.

Introduced by Republican Representative Chip LaMarca, Bill 1317 sets out rules to allow Florida residents to place their bets on both professional sports and college sports events.

Licenses would be made available to companies already approved by the state’s Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, in addition to the properties of tribal casinos and sports facilities professionals.

Bill could become law in Florida by early October

The bill does not necessarily specify how much these licenses would cost, nor how much tax licensed companies would be required to pay. However, the text proposes that sports betting licenses be renewed annually.

In this case, the Florida Department of Commercial and Professional Regulation Betting Division would also become the agency responsible for granting licenses. In addition, players could place their bets from anywhere in Florida using an approved mobile app.

If the project authored by Congressman Chip LaMarca goes ahead and gets all the necessary conditions to become a law, the tendency is that it can enter into force until October 1st of this year.

Sports betting market in the United States

Since the United States Supreme Court gave the go-ahead for states to legalize gambling in 2018, the country has become one of the top markets on the planet due to its immense population and passion for sports. And, more and more states are regulated and opening up to companies interested in this sector.
