Trial of former Los Angeles Dodgers star for alleged gambling involvement begins in the US

Yasiel Puig, former Los Angeles Dodgers star, appeared in federal court in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday morning (20), at the start of the trial involving the player in a case related to illegal gambling.

At the end of the afternoon session, Puig left the courtroom visibly confident. He left smiling, accompanied by Sabrina Bravom, which indicated satisfaction with the initial progress of the legal proceedings. The trial continues and is attracting attention due to the athlete’s sporting history.

What does the illegal gambling case attributed to Yasiel Puig involve?

The case focuses on allegations that Yasiel Puig placed bets on sporting events through an illegal gambling operation in 2019. Furthermore, prosecutors claim that the player himself lied years later when testifying to federal investigators about his involvement in the scheme.

According to prosecutors, Puig placed sports bets using a company run by Wayne Nix, a former minor league baseball player. The indictment alleges that Nix would send the bets to an associate, who then passed them on to Nix. During this period, in just a few weeks, Puig allegedly accumulated losses of $282,900.

Furthermore, prosecutors allege that after Puig sent Nix $200,000 to settle the debt related to the bets, the player gained access to sports betting websites operated by Nix. In this environment, Puig allegedly placed 899 bets on tennis, American football, and basketball games.

Federal investigation and formal charges against the player.

In 2022, federal investigators questioned Yasiel Puig about his role in the gambling operation. According to the indictment, the gambler made several false statements during questioning. Subsequently, according to investigators, Puig sent an audio message to an associate in which he admitted to lying to federal agents.

Puig faces three charges in the federal trial. One involves obstruction of justice, while the other two relate to false statements made by the athlete himself to investigators.

Initially, he reached an agreement with prosecutors to settle the case in November 2022, agreeing to plead guilty to lying to federal authorities. However, days later, Puig reneged on the agreement and declared his innocence in a public statement.

“I want to clear my name,” he said at the time. “I should never have agreed to plead guilty to a crime I didn’t commit.”

Court documents indicate that the trial is expected to last between eight and nine days. During Tuesday’s session, the court selected the jury responsible for the case. At the hearing, Puig wore a white collared shirt and a blue suit.

If convicted, Yasiel Puig could face significant prison sentences. Each charge of making a false statement carries a sentence of up to five years in prison, while the charge of obstruction of justice can result in a sentence of up to ten years.

Puig’s sporting career and trajectory after MLB.

At 35 years old, Yasiel Puig has built a remarkable career in professional baseball. He debuted in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013 and quickly stood out as one of the team’s most popular players. In his rookie season, Puig hit 19 home runs, stole 11 bases, and batted .319 in 104 games.

The following season, he was part of the All-Star team, the athlete’s only appearance in the event throughout his career. Puig remained with the Dodgers until 2018, when the team traded him to the Cincinnati Reds in a transaction that also involved Matt Kemp.

Months later, during the 2019 season, the club negotiated his transfer again, this time to the Cleveland Indians, thus ending his time in MLB.

Later, Puig pursued a career abroad. He played baseball in South Korea and also competed in the Mexican League, remaining active in the professional sports scene after leaving the main North American league.
