Rapper Drake’s reputation for shaking up the world of sports betting has taken a new turn, and this time, the target was the 2025 US Open, where he invested an impressive R$1.6 million in the victory of Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner.
If the Italian, who currently holds the world number 1 spot, wins the Grand Slam title, the Canadian musician could earn R$2.7 million, according to the note he himself posted on his social media last Tuesday (02).
However, the high-value bet immediately reignited the debate over the infamous “Drake curse.” The term was coined by fans and the media after the artist lost a long string of million-dollar bets across various sports.
The irony is that, at last year’s US Open, Drake lost R$1.1 million by betting against Sinner in a match against American Taylor Fritz, demonstrating the unpredictability of his predictions.
Drake’s Bets Beyond the US Open
A self-proclaimed sports betting fan, Drake doesn’t limit himself to tennis. His track record includes failed investments in high-profile events like the UFC, the World Cup, the NFL, and even Formula 1.
One of the most emblematic cases was the loss of R$6.3 million at UFC 281. On that occasion, he bet against Brazilian Alex Poatan in his duel with Israel Adesanya.
Additionally, in the 2022 World Cup final, he lost approximately R$5.3 million. The error occurred because he bet on Argentina to win over France in regulation time; however, penalties decided the match.
Final stretch in the tennis competition
While Drake’s bet sparks off-court debate, 24-year-old Jannik Sinner continues to show why he’s the favorite. He secured his spot in the semifinals with a dominant performance against compatriot Lorenzo Musetti.
In the match, which took place on Wednesday (03), Sinner demonstrated absolute control and gave his opponent no chance, winning with partial scores of 6/1, 6/4 and 6/2 in a display of strength and precision.
Now, the world number 1 is preparing for an even greater challenge: he will face Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, 25th in the ranking, in the semifinals. The match is scheduled for this Friday (5), at 8 pm, at Arthur Ashe Stadium, and will determine who advances to the grand final of the tournament.
