In August, Macau’s casino sector recorded its best performance since the Covid-19 crisis. Gross gaming revenue (GGR) reached MOP22.16 billion (US$2.76 billion) in August.

Thus, the Directorate of Gaming Inspection and Coordination (DICJ) reported that the figure rose by 12.2% compared to August 2024. The result also surpassed July’s MOP 22.13 billion, setting a new milestone for the city’s gambling industry.

August became the most profitable month since January 2020, before the pandemic restrictions. Furthermore, analysts indicate that the summer vacation period boosted tourism, raising hotel occupancy to nearly 90%. However, observers warn that activity tends to decline in September, which marks the beginning of the low season.

Annual recovery and government projections

Cumulative figures also demonstrate a strong recovery. Between January and August, Macau’s gaming revenue totaled approximately MOP 163.05 billion (US$20.3 billion).

Therefore, this represents a 7.2% improvement over the same period last year. The total already corresponds to more than 82% of the amount achieved in the first eight months of 2019.

Initially, the government projected average monthly revenue of MOP20 billion for 2025. However, a weaker-than-expected start to the year led authorities to revise the forecast to MOP19 billion per month. With August’s results, the sector exceeded revised expectations, indicating a faster-than-expected recovery.

Analyst optimism and sector momentum

International investment banks maintain an optimistic outlook on Macau’s future. JP Morgan, for example, described the performance as a “busy and happy summer.”

The bank stated: “We anticipate sustained double-digit GGR growth in the coming quarters, at least through the first quarter of 2026.” In this regard, Morgan Stanley projected 15% revenue growth for the second half of 2025.

Furthermore, experts point out that August’s revenue was the highest recorded outside of major holiday periods. This highlights the depth of the recovery in the tourism and mass gaming segments. Confidence is reinforced by the announcement of dividend payments by several operators in the sector.

Macau on the global gambling scene

Macau’s growth reinforces its continued dominance in the international casino scene. For comparison, the U.S. state of Nevada reported revenue of $1.36 billion in July 2025.

While this represents growth, the figure remains modest compared to Macau’s monthly totals, reaffirming its status as the world’s leading gambling hub. The local casino economy, after a weak January, has posted steady gains and is now consolidating a strong recovery trend.
