On November 4th, Brazilian fans will meet the Libertadores 2023 champion. To heat up the clash between Fluminense and Boca Juniors, which will take place at Maracanã, Betfair carried out a survey on Brazilian fans’ preferences regarding the decisive game in Rio de Janeiro.
The survey, carried out by research consultant Renata Bendit on the Offerwise platform and developed by Betfair, interviewed 1004 people, men and women, fans of the main Brazilian clubs, from all regions of Brazil between classes A, B, C and D.
In the sample, it was found that the majority of respondents, 79% of them, believe that Fluminense will be the Libertadores champion in 2023. 21% of Brazilians think that Boca Juniors will win the cup.
For 63% of the fans interviewed, Fluminense really is Brazil in the Libertadores, regardless of the club they support. Interestingly, Vasco fans (88%) are those who most agree with the phrase, followed by Santos fans (81%) and Grêmio fans (79%).
On the other hand, direct rivals seem more indecisive; only 51% of Flamengo fans agree that Flu is Brazil in the Libertadores.
How much is a Libertadores worth to Fluminense fans?
The current Libertadores champion, Flamengo, did not make it past the round of 16 in the 2023 edition, however, the rivalry between the red-black team and the Rio de Janeiro tricolor is present in the competition.
Betfair asked Flu fans if they would exchange the last two Campeonato Carioca titles over Flamengo for this year’s Libertadores cup and the results were surprising.
41% of Fluminense fans would not sacrifice their Rio de Janeiro cups over their main rival and give up this 2023 Libertadores. While the majority (59%) would hand over the state titles for continental glory.
Fla x Flu or Boca x River?
When it comes to national classics, the fight between Brazilians and Argentines is won again by national support.
For Brazilians, the classic between Flamengo and Fluminense is bigger than the clash between Boca Juniors and River Plate. 67% of Brazilians think the Fla x Flu history is greater than that of its Argentine neighbors.
However, fans of two other great Brazilian classics do not seem so convinced by this statement.
56% of Inter fans say that the Boca x River rivalry is bigger than Fla x Flu, as do 45% of Grêmio fans.
The vote in the Argentine derby among fans from Palmeiras (45%) and Corinthians (39%), accustomed to the degree of rivalry in the São Paulo derby, was also representative.
Betfair created an exclusive website for the survey with these results and many others for the final.
According to Betfair, Fluminense is the favorite for the Libertadores title: the probability of Flu winning the title is 60%, against 40% for the Argentines.
For the match in normal time, there is a 46% chance of the match being won by Flu, a 30% chance of a draw (which takes the decision to extra time), taking the decision to penalties, and 24% for Boca Juniors.
