The Club World Cup will have special monitoring regarding betting on matches in the tournament. The announcement was made by FIFA and the aim is to prevent possible manipulation in any of the 63 matches of the tournament. The competition will take place between June and July in the United States.
In a meeting held last week, football’s highest authority established measures to monitor suspicious movements that may occur during the competition.
To mitigate potential problems, FIFA’s Integrity Task Force will work across all competitions organized by the organization with the same objective. However, the debut of this new model of operation will take place in what will be the biggest club tournament in history.
FIFA seeks to prevent irregularities in sports betting
All of this work is aimed at preventing cases of irregularities in sports betting. In addition, it seeks to sanction all forms of match manipulation, corruption and other unethical or illegal activities that may compromise the integrity of the game.
In the United States, where the meeting took place, members of various entities that will be involved in the process were present.
At the site, which will also host the World Cup, were members of the country’s justice department, members of the FBI, Interpol, Concacaf, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Council of Europe, the Copenhagen Group, the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), the United Lotteries for Integrity in Sport (ULIS), and Sportradar.
With the support of this group that brings together several entities, FIFA will monitor the betting market and game events in real time throughout all Club World Cup matches.
According to Carlos Schneider, FIFA’s Director of Judicial Bodies, this effort has to be a joint one. “FIFA has joined forces with key organisations to protect all tournaments against match manipulation and address issues related to integrity.”
“The task force is a collaborative effort between FIFA and the most relevant international integrity stakeholders whose expertise will contribute to safeguarding, promoting and maintaining the integrity of FIFA competitions. It was great to discuss the progress that is being made,” he said.
