The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), the leading voice on integrity for the global licensed sports betting industry, has published its 2024 Sports Betting Integrity Report.

The report highlights that the total number of suspicious betting alerts reported in 2024 was 219, a 17% increase over the revised 2023 number of 187 alerts. However, the 2024 number remains 11% below the annual average of 245 alerts during 2020-23.

Suspicious betting alerts covered 12 sports in 53 countries in 2024, with the Czech Republic (19) and Turkey (11) topping the list. Football and tennis led the way in reported cases, with 75 and 58 alerts respectively, together accounting for 61% of all notifications last year.

Geographic change

There has been a geographic shift, with suspicious betting on sporting events in Europe falling from 113 alerts in 2023 to 80 in 2024. Meanwhile, alerts in Asia have increased from 17 to 40, and those in Africa have grown from 16 to 28.

IBIA is closely monitoring these trends to determine whether they are just anomalies or a growing trend that will require some strategic action.

IBIA data played a key role in sports investigations, leading to 33 matches found to be corrupt and 17 sanctions against clubs, players and officials for betting violations.

Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, said: “The integrity stance remains relatively consistent with previous years, with the focus of suspicious betting remaining primarily on football and tennis.

A geographic shift away from European sporting events has been noted, but it is too early to determine whether this is a continuing trend. As with all potentially corrupt activities, IBIA is analyzing the data and working with its members and the global integrity network to implement targeted countermeasures.

IBIA’s growing membership is resolute in its commitment to identify, disrupt and prevent corrupt sports betting activities and work with stakeholders.”

Key findings from the 2024 report

Football (75) and tennis (58) continue to account for the majority of suspicious betting alerts, with a total of 133 cases (61%) — a slight decrease from their 64% share in 2023.

There has been a geographic shift in reported alerts in 2024, with Europe’s share falling to 37%, Asia having 18% and Africa having 13% of all reported alerts.

Therefore, alerts appeared in 12 sports, in 53 countries, with the Czech Republic (19) and Turkey (11) recording the most suspected cases.

Sports investigations completed in 2024, which used IBIA data, resulted in 33 matches considered corrupt, leading to 17 sanctions against clubs, players or managers.

IBIA uses suspicious betting activity data from its unique monitoring network, achieving $300 billion in betting revenue per year. In doing so, the organization helps sports, regulators, policymakers and law enforcement authorities investigate and prosecute criminals.

In 2024, additional functionality was added to the association’s monitoring platform. This technological improvement has enhanced the association’s ability to detect and report suspicious activity on its members’ betting markets.
