Conor McGregor, known for being one of the most media figures in MMA, faced a significant financial loss in a bet during UFC 308, an event that took place in Abu Dhabi.
The Irish fighter bet half a million euros (equivalent to around R$2.8 million) in a combined bet, predicting Max Holloway‘s victories against Ilia Topuria and Robert Whittaker‘s victory over Khamzat Chimaev. However, both predictions failed, resulting in a considerable financial loss.
If this combined bet had been successful, McGregor would have earned a return of 17 million dollars, a value that is around R$97 million.
The odds for Holloway’s knockout were at 7.4. Whittaker’s was 4.6, which meant that, by getting both predictions right, the fighter would see the amount invested multiplied by 34.04 times.
Details about UFC 308 fights
The fight between Topuria and Holloway, which was the main fight of the night, had an unexpected outcome for McGregor. Ilia Topuria, in a dominant performance, knocked out Holloway at 1 minute and 34 seconds of the third round.
Thus, marking the first knockout suffered by the American in his career. Topuria landed a straight right on Holloway, followed by a left cross that knocked him down. Before the referee interrupted, the former champion still suffered some additional blows on the ground.
In the co-main fight, Robert Whittaker also did not achieve the desired result, being submitted by Chimaev with a rear naked choke.
Even after more than a year away from the Octagon, Chimaev showed effectiveness by submitting Whittaker in just three minutes of combat. After the fight, Whittaker showed images of his condition, including dislocated teeth as a result of the intense fight.
These two results frustrated the expectations of Conor McGregor, who ended up with a million-dollar loss in his attempt to bet on UFC 308.
