The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) reported 90 suspicious betting alerts to authorities in the second quarter of 2024. The total alerts are 3% lower than the revised number of 93 alerts in the first three months of the year.
However, it represents an increase of 80% compared to the total of 50 alerts in the same period last year.
IBIA and its members monitor US$300 billion per year in betting volume (handle) across more than 125 sports betting brands globally. Therefore, the entity is the betting integrity monitor of its kind in the world.
Details of the 90 alerts and statement from the IBIA CEO
The 90 suspicious betting incidents involved 8 sports, in 25 countries and 5 continents. Other important data includes:
- Three sports (electronic sports, football, table tennis) represented 84% of all alerts in the period.
- Electronic sports represented around 50% of the total; however, most of these alerts concern a single case, which also contributed to a revised figure of 43 in the first quarter
- Poland had the highest number of country-specific alerts, with 6 cases.
- The 19 alerts about sporting events in Europe represent an increase of 15 compared to the 4 alerts in the first three months of the year.
Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, said: “An increase in alerts compared to previous quarters is mainly related to a case in esports. The situation is being closely monitored and increased vigilance is advocated as we seek to work with interested parties to investigate.
While the increase in alerts may understandably draw attention, it should be noted that esports has seen a significant reduction in annual notifications among IBIA members in 2023.
The case again highlights the importance and effectiveness of customer account monitoring in detecting suspicious bets and protecting sporting events, consumers and regulated betting markets.”
Focus on Brazil
The integrity report includes a focus on Brazil before the market opens to licensed operators. The expectation is for a betting volume of US$34 billion in the domestic market, generating US$2.8 billion in taxable revenue by 2028.
IBIA also recently called for other jurisdictions in Latin America to adopt Brazil’s regulatory framework and integrity provisions, which include a requirement that licensed sports betting operators must join an independent integrity monitoring body.
