TV Globo expressed to the government its interest in operating sports betting in Brazil. It is part of a group of 134 companies, including Caixa Econômica Federal, which sought accreditation as bettors. TV Globo’s request was formalized through DFS Entretenimento, the subsidiary responsible for managing the fantasy game “Cartola FC“.
Among the companies seeking accreditation, Caixa Econômica Federal, casinos and betting companies known for sponsoring Brazilian football clubs stand out. This scenario reflects the diversity of participants interested in expanding the sports betting market in the country.
Thus, the Ministry of Finance established a 30-day deadline for companies to request licenses that would allow the exploration of fixed-odd betting, covering both sports betting and online games.
Globo seeks new business opportunities with Cartola FC
But this deadline ended on November 30, 2023. TV Globo, through DFS, issued a note highlighting its attention to “new business opportunities” and emphasizing the analysis of the potential of sports betting in Brazil.
The social video network Kwai, represented by Fortunever Brasil, and MGM, known for the iconic Las Vegas resort and casino, also joined the authorization queue.
However, among the companies that sought accreditation, well-known bets on the Brazilian scene stand out, such as Betano, 1xBet, Pixbet, SportingBet, SportsBet, Esportes da Sorte and Betfair.
This diverse group reflects the popularity and global reach of the sports betting market.
License priority will be given to those based in Brazil
It should be noted that 62 of the 134 applicant companies are Brazilian, while some have headquarters abroad, such as Curaçao, Malta, Seychelles and Costa Rica.
Preference in the authorization process will be given to companies that meet the requirements, including having headquarters in Brazil and minimum share capital.
But it is important to highlight that, until confirmation of accreditation, none of the companies are authorized or accredited by the Ministry of Finance to operate in this market. In addition to government approval, companies must also pay for a grant.
Ou seja, a legislação que regulamenta as apostas esportivas estabelece que o governo recolherá uma alíquota de 12% sobre a arrecadação das casas de apostas, deduzido o pagamento dos prêmios.
In addition, bettors will also be responsible for paying 15% of the amount won with the prize, as stipulated by law.
