The English club confirmed that the player is the target of the Public Ministry and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
“Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal sports betting activities,” according to the club’s board.
“Sandro is fully involved in the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities,” board members said.
“He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United can no longer comment at this time,” they concluded.
According to the English Football Federation (FA), he is free to play in Newcastle’s next game, on Saturday, against Crystal Palace, in the Premier League. However, the FA is awaiting the results of investigations in Italy before making further statements.
The English club currently has three partnerships with online sports betting companies: Fun88, Sportsbet.io and BetMGM.
According to the press in Italy and England, Sandro Tonali was interviewed by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office last Tuesday and allegedly confessed to betting on Milan’s victories, including some with him on the field. He is now back in the city of Newcastle.
Tonali reportedly admitted involvement in sports betting
Tonali, Zaniolo and Fagioli were mentioned in an investigation into illegal betting. The player now at Newcastle would have admitted betting on games when he was at Milan.
Tonali was wanted by the Italian police during the national team’s concentration.
He was left out of the game against England, in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
