The president of the Sports Betting CPI, Deputy Julio Arcoverde (PP-PI), requested the extension of the commission’s work for another 2 months.

The continuation of the works, if accepted, will come into effect from the date initially determined for the closure of the investigations.

In an official request, the deputy claimed that there are still “several people and entities to be heard, steps to be taken, documents to be requested and analyzed, with applications already approved, the extension of the deadline is a conditio sine qua non to achieve the objectives of this CPI”.

According to Arcoverde, so far the Executive Secretariat has received 246 requests from members of the collegiate, ranging from invitations and summonses to breaches of secrecy and requests for information on investigations and police procedures.

The CPI on sports betting, which investigates alleged match-fixing schemes in Brazilian football, was initiated on May 17.

The initial period defined for the works is 120 days.

The initiative to create the collegiate stemmed from investigations carried out by the Public Ministry of Goiás that raised suspicions of manipulation in the result of four Serie B games of the Brazilian Championship.

Titled Operation Maximum Penalty, it revealed that irregularities were also committed in Serie A games of the Brasileirão last year, as well as in state championship matches this year.

Some players have already been judged by sports justice and were punished with fines, suspensions and even banishment from football.
