The Federal Police appointed deputy Sergio Eduardo Busato to assist with investigations by the sports betting CPI.

Thus, a commission of the Chamber of Deputies is investigating an alleged match-fixing scheme in football matches.

The announcement was made this Wednesday, 2, by the rapporteur, Congressman Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE).

“We are now starting the phase of focusing, with police intelligence, on summons and invitations so that we have companies present here, responding to the CPI. Perhaps even with a breach of secrecy so that we can expand the ongoing investigations,” he said.

Congressman Luciano Vieira (PL-RJ) considers that dialogue with companies is essential, especially in view of the provisional measure (PM 1182/23) that regulates the exploitation of sports betting.

“We are at the moment of regulation with the federal government”.

So, right away, before regulating any company, we have to break its bank secrecy and see who is right and who is wrong. It is the beginning of everything”, added Vieira.

The vice-president of the CPI, Congressman Daniel Agrobom (PL-GO), admits up to two weekly meetings to hear the summoned and invited companies.

Before, however, the associations of sports betting companies must attend the commission, as early as next week.

Deputy Delegado da Cunha (PP-SP) also demanded prior testimonies from representatives of the Sports Justice and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Federal Police and the Sports Betting CPI

The sports betting CPI heard, also this Wednesday, the Federal Police Deputy in Sergipe, Fabrício Martins Rocha, with experience in Distraction and Rehearsed Play operations.

He admitted that these frauds end up destined for investigations by state civil police.

The issue is “relatively new” for the Federal Police given the “interstate repercussions requiring uniform repression” and the correlation with other crimes, such as money laundering and currency evasion.

According to Fabrício Rocha, the biggest challenge in the investigation is the difficulty of accessing some basic information.

“Most of these betting companies are headquartered outside the national territory, and you do not have access to information or have the means to officiate about any suspected fraud”, he explained.

According to Rocha, the Federal Police maintain a memorandum of intent with Esporte Radar, a Swiss company with expertise in analyzing games and indicating possible manipulations.

The delegate praised MP 1182 for providing for the incorporation of companies in Brazil for the exploitation of betting.

According to Congressman Albuquerque (Republicanos-RR), responsible for inviting Fabrício Martins Rocha, investigations by the CPI on sports betting and the Federal Police should also identify the financiers of fraud in sports betting.

Maximum Penalty Operation

Therefore, the scandal investigated by the CPI was denounced in the Maximum Penalty Operation, carried out by the Goiás Public Prosecutor’s Office under judicial secrecy.
