The search for sports betting on Google reached impressive levels and levels similar to those of popular topics in Brazil, such as the reality show Big Brother Brasil.
The information is from a study carried out by Google Trends that considers searches carried out on the platform between January 1st and July 25th.
Compared to the same period of the year, the search for the activity grew by 160%. In addition, five of the most searched words in 2023 are bookmakers names.
According to a column by Monica Bergamo, in Folha de S. Paulo, companies arouse interest close to other terms that are often searched on the site, such as BBB23 and Detran.
Last week, the Federal Government published the sports betting PM. That is, a provisional measure that came into force immediately and defined rules for the sector in Brazil.
Interest in the term “provisional measure” has risen by more than 2,050% in the last seven days since its publication on July 25.
Curiosity for the sports betting sector was already increasing in Brazil. Therefore, the search for the subject grew 14 times in Brazil.
Therefore, the legalization of the activity in the national territory took place in December 2018, still under the government of Michel Temer.
Boom in bookmakers and MP-GO operation boosted searches on Google
The growth of bookmakers and the discovery of a criminal scheme by the Public Ministry of Goiás (PM-GO) contributed to accelerate the betting regulation in the country.
The investigation process gave rise to Operation Maximum Penalty, which investigates irregularities committed in last year’s Serie A and B football games, as well as in State games in 2023.
In addition, this scheme triggered a CPI that is investigating complaints of match-fixing to the Chamber of Deputies.
Several players involved have already been punished sporting fines, suspensions and banishment from the sport.
The Public Ministry’s investigation continues. But teams and bookmakers are considered victims of criminals.
What is already going on for the sports betting sector?
The sports betting provisional measure was edited last week. The PM came into effect immediately.
According to the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, the projection is that, initially, the federal government will account for around R$ 2 billion.
Thus, the ministry is betting on revenue growth of between R$ 6 billion and R$ 12 billion in the long term.
The division of revenue from the sports betting sector will take place as follows:
- Social security: 10%
- National Public Security Fund (FNSP): 2.55%
- Basic education: 0.82%
- Ministry of Sports: 3%
- National Sports System (clubs and athletes): 1.63%
