The president of Goiás Esporte Clube, Paulo Rogério Pinheiro, requested a study from the emerald team’s legal department to assess the possibility of creating a clause in the players’ contracts that prohibits relatives of the athletes from placing sports bets.
The statement was given in an interview with Radio CBN Goiânia, on Wednesday, the 15th, during a game in the last round of the first phase of the Goiano Championship.
Pinheiro said he is concerned about the scandal revealed by prosecutors from the Public Ministry of the State of Goiás, involving a former player from the rival team. Vila Nova said it took the initiative to seek legal advice to see what can be done.
According to him, he met with his entire legal body and said that they are already studying an amendment to the contract of all professional athletes at the club, from the sub20 to the professional, which will include a clause that relatives up to the second degree will not be able to play in bets on Goiás games. “If the club finds out, it will be a unilateral breach of contract where I will charge a fine”, said Pinheiro. “I don’t know if we will be able to, my legal body will study this issue. I am very concerned.”
Pinheiro also classified the episode as “a grain of sand in the desert” and said that corrupt practice has been commonplace not only in football. “ The day you arrive at the Olympics and stain it, you will see that the world will argue about bets. For me, this has already arrived in all sports”, he highlighted.
The president of Goiás still accused betting companies of not being serious and that despite being sponsored by one, he does not agree with the practice. “I’ve been talking about this for a year. There is no saint in this story,” he said.
“I don’t agree with bets despite being sponsored by one, since they use my brand. How many thousand bets use my brand in the world? I don’t get anything for it. It’s wrong”, he highlighted, noting that he congratulated the president of Vila Nova for taking the matter under investigation.
“I already called him and now I congratulate him publicly. Everyone has to applaud the president of Vila Nova because he showed and opened up a problem that Brazil already had. This has already happened in the São Paulo Cup, Series B in Rio de Janeiro. Several places that happened. This will arrive at the Olympics”, he guaranteed.
