A year after sports betting was legalized in New York, the state has become the largest gambling market in the country, except for Nevada (where Las Vegas is located, where the main US casinos are located).

Activity data show that sports betting moved US$ 16.2 billion in 2022. In December alone, the volume generated was US$ 1.62 billion. In January of last year, when sports betting was released, the total was $1.67 billion. This remains the record in the betting market for a month, among all US states.

Currently, nine companies are licensed to operate betting issued by the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC), the regulatory body of activity in New York:

  • DraftKings;
  • Caesars Sportsbook;
  • Wynn Interactive;
  • Genting;
  • Rush Street Interactive;
  • PointsBet;
  • BetMGM;
  • Bally’s;
  • Fanduel.

Since 2018, 36 US states have legalized online sports betting, moving more than $80 billion in 2022. The most recent is Ohio, where legalization took place this month.

The growth of sports betting in the US

In several places around the world, such as the United States and Brazil, the sports betting sector is growing exponentially. Between January and November 2022, the value moved in the market reached more than US$ 79.6 billion in the United States, according to a report released by the Variety Intelligence Platform.

Compared to the value generated in 2021, there is an increase of 98%. If we calculate based on the years 2020 and 2019, there is an evolution of 569% and 2,268%, respectively. Among the states participating in the report, we have New Jersey in second position with US$ 8.1 billion and New York at the top of the list, with US$ 13 billion.

With more than 450 platforms and sponsorship in almost all of the biggest football teams in Brazil, the sports betting market is expected to move more than R$ 12 billion in 2023.
