Payments provider Worldpay has released new data which predicts a 15% increase in UK betting during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar compared to UEFA Euro 2022. The provider notes that this increase is expected despite the current crisis that is inflicting the country.
The data shows that 2.5 million bets were processed during Euro 2022, with a total authorized value of around £50 million ($59 million). The supplier’s predicted increase for the 2022 World Cup is expected to grow further if England progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
Worldpay’s predictions were made by its lead senior director of betting, Alex Morgan-Moodie, who estimated that the first World Cup match between Qatar and Ecuador would see around 7,000 payments per minute made to operators. This is due to the fact that the game took place at a local time attractive to British punters.
The Worldpay Director also expects large betting volumes for the country, citing previous data showing that the betting volume for England could be up to 20% higher when compared to other games in the group stage of the competition.
Furthermore, Morgan-Moodie believes that the time of day a game is played has a marked effect on betting volume. This data is from Euro 2022 which revealed that payouts per minute were 15-20% higher in the evening compared to the afternoon and midday start times.
Data from WorldPay and Morgan-Moodie also revealed that betting volume is set to increase as the tournament progresses, citing Euro 2020 when British bookmakers saw 10,000 payouts per minute ahead of the opening game between England and Denmark in semifinal of the competition.
