Major League Baseball (MLB) released a statement praising Prop 27’s sports betting integrity provisions. The league also praised the initiative’s potential to bring a safe and responsible online sports betting market to California, United States.

Titled Corporate Online Gambling Prop, or Prop 27, the online sports betting proposal is funded by out-of-state corporations to legalize online and mobile gambling in the state of California.

MLB believes Prop 27 has the potential to provide its fans with a suitable alternative to illegal offshore betting, with the organization detailing three big reasons why the proposal should be brought forward.

“While legal sports betting continues to expand across the country, Major League Baseball remains committed to protecting the integrity of its games and creating a safe experience for fans who want to bet,” MLB said in a statement.

“Proposition 27 – the only measure on the upcoming California vote that would authorize and regulate online sports betting – includes strong integrity provisions designed to help MLB meet those commitments.”

The measure would require, for example:

  • 1 – for sports betting operators to notify leagues of suspicious activity;
  • 2 – that leagues propose restrictions on betting markets particularly susceptible to manipulation;
  • 3 – the facilitation of other forms of cooperation related to integrity between the State, leagues and operators.

“MLB believes Prop 27 has the steps to create a safe and responsible online sports betting market in California — a state with millions of fans looking for alternatives to illegal offshore betting sites.”

Prop 27 is currently a hotly debated topic, with the California Democratic Party last month revealing its endorsements of the November voting measures, with the proposal not being on its list.

The party voted against legalizing online sports betting backed by commercial operators, staying neutral in a separate measure, Prop 26 (Tribal Sports Wagering Act), which would legalize sports betting at tribal venues and horse racing tracks.
