Stats Perform launches Opta Vision, the 'next generation' in sports data

Stats Perform, the sports technology leader in data and AI, has announced a new series of advanced metrics with the introduction of live data from Opta Vision for the 2022-23 football season.

Opta Vision represents a new generation of more accurate sports data. Combining industry-leading Opta Perform event data with tracking data to create a single, merged dataset, Opta Vision offers richer performance insights for professional teams and exciting new opportunities for broadcasters and publishers to generate new story lines.

Opta Vision’s tracking data includes stadium feeds from camera systems installed at game venues and, for the first time, the collection of remote tracking from video sources, leveraging state-of-the-art computer vision technology.

The merged dataset also utilizes Stats Perform’s Qwinn AI Intelligence to generate rich data insights that can assist with sports betting.

New data points and predictive metrics include insights related to dynamic changes in a team’s form during a match; as well as various pass prediction insights that are trained on millions of data points that consider the movement of attacking and defending players in the moments they make a pass.

“We are very excited to introduce the next generation of Opta data to our customers. By synchronizing event and tracking data and then utilizing our AI capabilities to generate rich insights, we will be empowering the teams’ performance analytics departments as well as the production lines, to identify new performance trends and tell great in-game stories”. Nancy Hensley, Head of Product at Stats Perform said.

Other data points being released as part of Opta Vision’s initial feed include detection of pressure intensity for every pass attempted in a match and a new qualifier on passes to indicate when a player completes a line-breaking pass.

Both insights will be available live to customers for various European leagues, providing greater context for key events and helping to provide customers with a more accurate picture of what is happening during any given game.

“The use of tracking data has grown in recent years, but insights have been limited to simple metrics.” comments Jens Melvang, senior project manager at Stats Perform.

“By merging our tracking data with the best data from football events, we are able to provide accurate and insightful metrics that give a more complete picture of what is happening on the pitch,” added Melvang.
