Cryptocurrencies as the blockchain-based alternative payment method are becoming more and more common. On the south coast of England, Southampton Football Club and encryption-based sports betting operator Sportsbet.io have demonstrated yet another example.

Sportsbet.io announced the launch of the ‘Crypto Fan Fund’, donating two Bitcoin (BTC) to Southampton FC.

The fund will be used to carry out fan-led initiatives starting with the 2021-22 season. Two BTC’s, at the current market price, equal US$133,754.20.

All decisions about how and where the fund will be used will be made by Saints Voice, Southampton’s longstanding panel of supporters.

A new kind of initiative for Southampton FC

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier commented on the initiative: “The people who will decide where this money goes is the Saints Voice, which is the group of fans that was created to build a bond between them and the club, which is incredibly important for football clubs to engage with their fans.”

“And so this group has the donation in their hands and they’re the kings, they’re the ones who make the decisions; and I’m sure they’re going to make some fantastic decisions about where this donation goes,” concludes Tissier.

Sporsbet.io is a sports betting operator that only accepts payment in cryptographic currencies. It belongs to the Yolo Group, which was recently branded by the Coingaming Group, and previously sponsored Watford Football Club – another Premier League team.

Southampton, meanwhile, have enjoyed a healthy performance on the field, currently ranking 13th in the Premier League table.
