FIFA announces decision and Kieran Trippier will serve suspension due to illegal bet

The highest entity of football, FIFA did not accept the appeal of Atletico Madrid, Spain, to suspend the 10-week punishment imposed on player Kieran Trippier.

The information was announced earlier this week, after FIFA assessed the situation in which the athlete indirectly placed bets on his departure from Tottenham, England, for the current team.

“The FIFA Appeals Committee rejected the appeal filed by Atlético de Madrid in a case involving player Kieran Trippier. This confirms the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, of December 23, 2020, which extends the sanctions imposed on the player by the English Federation so that they take effect on a global level ”, stated in the FIFA note.

In addition to being away from any football-related activity during this period, the player will still have to pay a fine of £ 70,000 (R $ 490,000 at the current price). The punishment includes the next eight commitments of the Spanish club, in all tournaments to be played.

This means that Trippier will not be able to help his teammates and coach Diego Simeone in the clash valid for the round of 16 of the European League of Champions. The tendency is that he is prevented from playing in the first game against Chelsea, on February 23.

Prior to that, FIFA had granted a release so that Trippier could return to the pitch while Atletico’s appeal was assessed. The player’s club argued that he could not be penalized internationally for a decision enforced by the English Football Federation (FA).

Atlético and Trippier should appeal FIFA decision

According to the FA, Trippier passed on inside information in messaging apps about his transfer to Atletico Madrid to close friends, who later would have taken advantage of this to place bets.

Apparently, Atlético de Madrid should not accept the suspension imposed by FIFA and is preparing to file a new appeal in defense of its athlete. “We will ask for the immediate preventive suspension of the sanction to the TAS (Arbitral Tribunal for Sport),” a source from the Spanish club told AFP.
