Receita bruta de jogos na Europa movimenta €123,4 bilhões, em 2024

Figures published by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) highlighted total gross gaming revenue (GGR) of €123.4 billion, around R$758 billion, generated by the European online gaming market during 2024. The figure represents a 5% increase compared to 2023.

Aggregated data and forecasts collected from the EGBA European Market Report 2025 point to growth in online gambling. The report, which covers the EU-27 and UK gaming markets, shows growth in online gambling of €47.9 billion and €75.5 billion respectively.

Growth by game type

Interestingly, the sector that recorded the highest overall revenue throughout 2024 was the lottery, generating a figure of €38 billion, making it the largest gambling product on the continent.

Of this total figure, €37.9 billion was generated by land-based bettors. On the other hand, €7.1 billion was generated online. After that, it was casino gaming, which reached a total revenue of €30 billion during the year, with £21.5 billion coming from online and €8.5 billion from land-based betting.

Elsewhere, gaming machine revenue topped €24.9 billion, with sports betting generating €20.1 billion. However, online accounts for €13.7 billion.

In fact, global online gaming activity saw a 2% growth in market share compared to 2023 results, and now accounts for 39% of the European gaming market.

Although the physical game recorded an increase in revenue during 2024, its market share fell from 63% to 61% in 2023.

Growth by revenue jurisdiction in Europe

Geographically, the national market that reported the largest online gaming market share for 2024 was Sweden with 68.3%. In second place, Finland and Denmark are tied with 68.1%. However, at the other end of the scale, Spain recorded the smallest online gaming market share, with 14.2%.

While the UK market remains the largest of those analysed, it now generates a revenue value of €30.8 billion, followed by €25.5 billion generated in Italy, €17.8 billion in France and €17.7 billion in Germany.

Outlook for 2025

Revenue growth projections for the European online gaming market during 2025 indicate an anticipated revenue increase of 3.5% compared to these most recent figures. As per the report, the association would record an expected revenue figure of €127.7 billion for this year.

Additionally, online gaming is expected to surpass 40% market share in Europe, paired with online revenue of €51.1 billion. Physical gaming revenue is also expected to increase slightly to a figure of €76.6 billion.

Commenting on these latest results, Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of EGBA, said: “The European gaming market has shown steady growth through 2024. While land-based gaming remains dominant and continues to grow in absolute terms, online channels are showing stronger momentum, driven by changing consumer preferences and technological advancement.”

“Looking ahead to 2025, we expect online gambling to surpass the significant 40% market share milestone, with this trend projected to continue in the coming years as online gambling is expected to approach parity with land-based gambling by 2029.”
