Last Wednesday (02), the Federal Audit Court (TCU) decided to monitor the sports betting and online gaming market in Brazil. Thus, this court action aims to understand the social and economic impacts of betting on citizens’ lives.

The president of the TCU, Bruno Dantas, announced that inspection will focus on three main areas:

  1. Public health costs of betting. The proposal is to understand how betting can affect the well-being of the population.
  2. Impact on family purchasing power. It will be assessed whether betting affects the income of Brazilian families, generating excessive debt.
  3. Prevention of financial crimes. The TCU will also analyze the federal government’s actions to curb money laundering and protect bettors’ data.

The approval of the inspection recommendation by all members of the Court demonstrates the court’s concern about the growing challenges in the sports betting and online gaming market.

Public Ministry enters the discussion

On the other hand, the Public Ministry (MP) together with the TCU brought to light a controversial issue. In a representation sent on September 30th, it was requested the suspension of social benefits for those who participate in any type of gambling, including sports betting.

The MP also requested that the Court declare illegal the use of social cards, such as Bolsa Família, to make such bets. However, members have not yet tabled this proposal for debate.

This move by the Public Ministry illustrates an effort to protect the vulnerable in the context of betting. In other words, the body seeks to avoid diverting resources intended for social benefits to online betting.

Later today (03), President Lula will meet with ministers to discuss the payment methods available for online betting. Therefore, the government is expected to announce measures to protect players and consciously use social resources.

The announcement of a provisional measure to adjust some aspects of the sector’s regulations is not ruled out.
