Brazil has stood out in the global online betting scene. According to a recent analysis by Sports Value, the country has surpassed England in the use of betting shops.
Data from GWI shows that, in 2024, 22% of Brazilians usually bet on online platforms, compared to 19% of English people. This advance is significant, especially when compared to the previous year, where only 15% of Brazilians were involved in betting, according to a Datafolha survey.
The increase in the number of online bettors places Brazil in a prominent position worldwide. Currently, the country occupies fifth place in the global ranking of the use of bookmakers.
Ahead of Brazil are New Zealand (4th), Greece (3rd), Norway (2nd) and South Africa (1st). South Africa leads the way with 30% of its population actively participating in online betting.
With the current rate of growth, experts project that Brazil could soon overtake South Africa, further consolidating its position among the countries with the largest number of bettors.
Growing lottery sector in Brazil
Another growing sector in addition to bookmakers are Caixa Econômica Federal lotteries, which raised R$12.3 billion in the first half of 2024, representing a growth of 19% compared to the previous year.
This increase contributed to a recurring net profit of R$3.287 billion in the second quarter, a jump of 27.3% compared to 2023.
Caixa is also seeking to expand its operations, requesting a license from the Ministry of Treasury to explore the sports betting market. Furthermore, the bank highlighted the growth of its housing loan portfolio, which reached R$783.6 billion.
Other areas also showed growth, such as financial margin and fee income, despite an increase in administrative expenses.
Default rates fell, and the institution reinforced its leadership in the savings market with R$741.191 billion in deposits, marking growth of 16.9% in one year.
