Spelinspektionen, the Swedish gambling authority, reported a significant increase in revenue for companies licensed in the country during the second quarter of 2024.
According to the data, total revenue, which is the difference between bets placed and winnings paid out — reached SEK 6.9 billion (€602.5 million), registering an increase of 6.4% compared to the same period last year. (second half of 2023: SEK 6.7 billion).
In the online commercial games segment, there was significant growth of 9.2%, with revenue of SEK 4.6 billion, compared to SEK 4.2 billion in the second quarter of 2023.
On the other hand, the state lotteries and slot machine sector suffered a slight drop, recording SEK 1.3 billion in revenue, compared to SEK 1.4 billion the previous year.
On the other hand, state casino gaming, represented by Casino Cosmopol, saw a sharp drop of 73.8%, from SEK 126 million in the second half of 2023 to SEK 33 million in 2024.
This decline coincided with the recent closure of Casino Cosmopol, raising police concerns about the possible exposure of consumers to illegal gambling.
Other sectors also showed variations, with revenue from games for public purposes/national lotteries falling slightly to SEK 893 million, while bingo remained stable at SEK 52 million.
In-person commercial gaming, such as restaurants and casinos, saw a modest increase, reaching SEK 56 million, compared to SEK 53 million the previous year.
At the end of the quarter, the Spelpaus self-exclusion service registered 112,000 subscribers, an increase of 1.7% compared to the previous quarter.
