The BtoBet report shows that with the regulation of sports betting, the country could become one of the main markets in the world, based on the size of its population and the Brazilian interest in the sport.
According to a study recently published by Grupo Globo, the largest mass media group in Latin America, and one of the largest media conglomerates in the world, the numbers for the local market are encouraging.
The study highlights that, in 2020, the sports betting market generated revenue of around BRL 7 billion (1.16 billion euros), despite the pandemic having paralyzed sporting events at a global level.
Gambling preferences at online casinos
When it comes to online casinos, 78% of respondents who took part in the study indicated that they play roulette. Blackjack was also very popular resulting in 66% of respondents, 64% of respondents said they play table games, slots with 63% of game options, video poker featured in 61% of total votes, while 50% of Participants also indicated that they play live dealer games.
The vision of online betting
When asked how Brazilians view online betting, the vast majority of the people (67%) linked the activity with entertainment.
However, 43% and 38% of total responses also indicated that betting was perceived as a business and a sport, respectively.

An interesting fact that is traced by BtoBet is that a third of the participants indicated the opportunity to connect or socialize with friends as one of the main motivators of their activity related to sports betting.
The study also gave insight into how the pandemic has affected player engagement. In fact, more than half of respondents responded that they made their first bet with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
About 59% of respondents said they started betting no more than 12 months ago, 13% said they started betting between 12 and 18 months, while 28% said they had been involved in betting for more than 18 months.
More specifically, 27% of respondents indicated that during the pandemic increased their betting activity, while 18% of respondents stated that the pandemic did not affect their betting behavior. On the other hand, 22% of the participants said they opted for less risky bets, while 21% opted to lower their stake.
Regarding the profile of betting behavior, 18% answered that they place bets daily, 16% bet from 4 to 6 times a week, 48% indicated that they bet from one to three times a week, and 18% do so two or three times. times a month or less.
The money spent monthly by Brazilian bettors
Asked about the amount bet monthly, 18% answered that they bet up to R$30; 17% between BRL 30.00 and BRL 50; 9% between R$51 and R$70; 18% between R$71 and R$100; 17% between BRL 101 and BRL 200; 9% between BRL 201 and BRL 500; while 10% responded that they bet more than R$501.
BtoBet also traced that in terms of betting division, 26% of participants answered that they bet on only 1 site, 33% answered that they use 2 sites, 29% bet on 3 to 5 different sites, while only 12% responded that they bet on 6 sites or more.
When asked about the most important factors they take into account when choosing a bookmaker, how quickly in payments topped the list of participant requirements. Participants also indicated the importance of bonuses, a wide availability of payment methods, better offers in terms of odds, and a diverse portfolio of sports content, games and markets within each game.
The most bet sports
BtoBet noted that in terms of the most popular sports to bet on, football was the most popular with 81% of the total votes, followed by basketball which received 33% of the total responses, eSports had 29%, poker had 26% of the total, MMA and volleyball had 23%, 21% chose horse racing, boxing received 21% of the total choices, 21% chose American football, and tennis is closed the list with 19%.
The most important competitions for betting
Referring to Newzoo statistics, the study also indicates that Brazil is the third country with the most eSports enthusiasts, with the modality having a greater following only in the United States and China.
The study also indicated that the Brasileirão, the top division football championship, followed by the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil, received the highest number of bets when compared to other leagues, competitions or sporting events.
When asked about the most popular types of bets, 55% of respondents responded that they prefer single bets, with the multiple and double bet receiving 42% and 36% of the total picks respectively.

The mobile connection and internet users
BtoBet research reports that in 2021 it was recorded that the country’s population reached a total of 213.3 million, while mobile connectivity totaled 205.4 million connections. Thus, the number of mobile connections is equivalent to 96.3% of the total population.
The same scenario is also relevant when we talk about Internet use. In January 2021, 160 million internet users were registered in Brazil, with the number of users significantly increasing by 9.6 million (+6.4%) between 2020 and 2021.
The analysis of these data indicates that the internet has a reach of 75%, which is more than the average registered for South America (72%).
When it comes to device ownership, 98.5% of internet users between the ages of 16 and 64 own a smartphone, 71.6% own a notebook or desktop, with 32.6% own a tablet.

With its 153.7 million Brazilians connected to cell phones, Brazil has a reach rate of 96.1% of people with mobile internet access. In addition, the average daily time using the internet on mobile devices is 5 hours and 17 minutes spent.
