Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué invested in the fantasy football platform Sorare, leading to his appointment as the company’s strategic consultant.

The investment of the Barcelona player from Spain, in addition to the support offered by the American fund Cassius Family, raises the total capital of the company to $ 8.6 million.

The fantasy football platform allows members to buy and exchange digital cards from professional football players. The company said 80 clubs joined the platform this year, including Bayern Munich (Germany), Juventus (Italy), Paris Saint-Germain (France), Porto (Portugal) and Zenit (Russia).

According to official information, sales of Sorare have grown by more than 1000% over this year. Globally, the company estimates that the fantasy football and sports card markets are worth around $ 5.4 billion and $ 18.6 billion, respectively.

Player participation in the development of Sorare

Piqué will join current Sorare board members, Christain Miele, and co-founders Nicolas Julia and Adrien Montfort.

“I see enormous potential in the sports game segment in a digital economy, where public attention is the most important factor,” said the Barcelona defender.

The footballer further commented that “I look forward to helping Sorare to expand its partnerships with football leagues, clubs and players around the world to build the best fantasy experience there is.”

Sorare’s CEO, Nicolas Julia, also expressed his enthusiasm for Piqué’s appointment to the team as “an active entrepreneur” who is “redefining the sports and entertainment industry”.

Still in the official note, the platform pointed out that “with Gerard on board, we will work together to integrate the 20 best leagues in the world. Gerard’s knowledge will help us expand our global presence to reach more football fans across the globe. ”
