Research Points that Brazilian Spends More on Betting and Games than on Rice

A survey released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on Thursday, 17, indicated that Brazilians are spending more on games and sports betting than on rice.

The survey was promoted between June 2017 and July 2018 and is part of the Household Budget Survey (POF), used to weight the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which is the official inflammation index in Brazil.

When considering the reasons for family expenses in Brazil, IBGE found that, in general, monthly expenses include R $ 12.79 for rice, as well as R $ 14.16 for sports betting and games. That is, a difference of R $ 2.

Another item that was the expense with tobacco, which was R $ 18.95 per month, an amount that exceeds the investment in vegetables (R $ 16.07), private pension (R $ 14.85) and exceeds up to the traditional French bread (R $ 18.63).

Average spending on gambling and gambling in Brazil

According to the IBGE, the expenditure on gambling and betting among people with continuous access to quality food (R $ 11.60) is twice as high as the expenditure of families with some food limitation (R $ 6.76 ).

On average, the lowest expenditure (R $ 5.96) was seen among families with moderate food insecurity. On the other hand, in groups with severe limitations on the variety of foods, the average monthly expenditure on games and bets was around R $ 6.

Regarding beverages, the IBGE survey pointed out that the costs with soft drinks every 30 days beat the money invested in the purchase of beers and draft beer (R $ 10.03) and ground coffee (R $ 9.92).

When purchasing clothing items, the average value used for women’s clothing (R $ 59.11) was R $ 11 above male items (R $ 48) per month.

Main monthly expenses of Brazilians

In general, consumption spending by Brazilian families exceeded the R $ 4,400 mark. Approximately 8% of this amount refers to the need to pay taxes, which when added to taxes, exceed the amounts applied in education and health.

In addition, electricity appeared as the fifth largest expense for Brazilian families with an average of R $ 136.43 per month, while the amount allocated to recreation and sports was R $ 21.71 every 30 days.
