LeoVegas Group has announced a major change in its leadership structure. Mattias Wedar has been appointed as the company’s new CEO, taking over the role from Gustaf Hagman, co-founder and leader of the company since 2011.
A 14-year journey comes to an end
Since founding LeoVegas Group in 2011 alongside Robin Ramm-Ericson, Gustaf Hagman has built a solid reputation as a visionary entrepreneur. During his 14 years of business, he has transformed the company into one of the leading operators in the industry. Hagman has always stood out for his innovative entrepreneurial spirit.
Now, the Swedish executive seems to consider his mission accomplished. Consequently, he returns to what he loves doing most: creating new organizations capable of revolutionizing the online gaming scene.
In his farewell statement, Hagman expressed his full support for his successor and shared some moving memories of the company’s founding.
Gustaf Hagman said: “When Robin Ramm-Ericson and I were sitting at a barbecue, thinking about a spinning iPhone like a roulette wheel, I never could have imagined that it would take us this far.
Founding and leading LeoVegas Group to become a market leader has been one of the greatest adventures of my life, and I am incredibly proud of everything we have achieved. When we launched in Sweden in 2012, the industry was in its infancy and we were navigating uncharted waters.
With a strong team and great commitment, we have successfully navigated this path. In addition, our fantastic corporate culture has been instrumental in becoming a leading international player. This is the right strategic moment to hand over the baton to Mattias Wedar.”
Confidence in LeoVegas’ new leader
Hagman also expressed his absolute confidence in Mattias Wedar. Regarding his successor, the executive said : “Mattias has been an invaluable asset since day one, and I am confident he is the right person to take the group to new heights.
After 14 years of traveling and being constantly connected, I am now looking forward to a period of rest and more free time. However, I will always be part of ‘Team Leo’ and will continue to follow their success closely.”
This transition comes just months after another significant change at the company. LeoVegas’ former CCO Chris Welch also recently stepped down from his role.
On the other hand, the company strengthened its team by appointing Carl Brincat, former CEO of MGA, as the new Director of Policy and Regulatory Affairs.
Mattias Wedar’s experience
Mattias Wedar brings an impressive background to his new role. For the past six years, he has served as Chief Product and Technology Officer at LeoVegas. He was subsequently promoted to Deputy CEO in April this year.
With his extensive executive experience in the gaming industry, Wedar will now oversee all operations for the group and report directly to Gary Fritz, President, Interactive, MGM Resorts International.
Commenting on his appointment, Mattias Wedar expressed enthusiasm and gratitude: “During the six years that I have been part of what we call Team Leo, I have been consistently impressed by our innovation, pioneering spirit and strong corporate culture.
The success story that Gustaf and Robin started 14 years ago is stronger than ever, and we see many exciting opportunities on the horizon. I am honored to be given the challenge of taking on the role of CEO in this new chapter for LeoVegas and I look forward to continuing to lead us to new milestones.”
Gary Fritz also shared his perspectives on the transition. The MGM executive noted: “Since MGM Resorts’ acquisition of LeoVegas Group three years ago, we have consistently delivered on our established growth strategy, with a strong focus on strategic investments and establishing BetMGM as a leading global gaming and sports betting brand.
I would like to thank Gustaf for his dedication and leadership, and I have every confidence that LeoVegas Group, under Mattias’ leadership, will continue to deliver on our plan. We look forward to supporting him and LeoVegas Group on our shared growth journey.”

It is worth noting that Gustaf Hagman has been frequently recognized for his achievements in the industry. Finally, LeoVegas, under his leadership, has achieved multiple wins in the Online Casino of the Year category at the Global Gaming Awards EMEA held in London.
Therefore, this track record of excellence has certainly laid a solid foundation for the company’s future under new management.
