Caixa earns less from lotteries. But it’s not sports betting’s fault

The balance sheet for the first quarter of 2025 presented an interesting fact: Caixa collected less from bets on federal lotteries.

According to the figures, the games earned the bank R$5.5 billion. This represents a 29% drop compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. In addition, a 10.1% drop compared to the same period in 2023.

But it is not the fault of online games or sports betting. The public bank rejects the hypothesis that the drop is related to the increase in bets on platforms such as sportsbooks.

One of the reasons given for the decrease is that, at the beginning of 2024, there was a greater number of Mega-Sena prizes – Caixa’s main lottery product – accumulated above R$100 million, which attracts more bettors.

However, at the beginning of 2025, only one prize surpassed this level. The president of Caixa Econômica Federal, Carlos Vieira, told journalists that the institution maintains plans to launch its own betting platform.

However, he emphasized that the bank will be cautious when entering this market. “Caixa is concerned about stimulating gambling and will prioritize conscious gambling,” he said.

The total net prizes delivered to bettors in the first quarter were R$2.1 billion, an increase of 8.2% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

In the first three months of the year, R$2.1 billion, equivalent to 38.6% of the total collected, was also allocated to the Federal Government’s social programs in the areas of social security, sports, culture, public safety, education and health.

Caixa betting platform still in the first half of the year

Carlos Vieira has already commented in interviews about the creation of Caixa’s own bet.

“We are in the final stages of studies to launch in the first half of the year. We understand that Caixa, a bank that has been involved in lotteries since 1966, could not be left out. Our role as a lottery manager over all these years has greatly helped the system in terms of conscious gaming,” he said.

According to preliminary information, the project would start with a projected revenue of around R$18 billion in two years. According to Vieira, the state-owned company has great potential to become one of the largest sports betting operators in the country.
