A woman from California, USA, won the impressive prize of US$1.2 billion in the Mega Millions lottery last Monday (20). In reais, the value would be close to R$6.8 billion. The lucky winner is Rosemary Casarotti who won the national draw alone. The winning ticket with the six numbers was purchased at the Sunshine Food and Gas Circle K, while the winner was drawing.
By her own choice, Casarotti decided not to give press conferences after her victory. According to the American press, she asked the authorities that she “wants to remain as private as possible.”
Lottery prize payout
To receive the jackpot, the lucky American chose to receive the prize in a single payment. This way, the approximate net value is around US$ 571 million. However, if she had chosen to pay it in installments over the years, the final total could reach US$ 1.26 billion.
The California Lottery celebrated the result, highlighting the importance of the prize to the state’s public education.
“We offer Rosemary our sincere congratulations on her historic win and our gratitude for her part in supporting the California Lottery‘s mission to provide additional funding for public education in our state,” said Harjinder Shergill Chima, the organization’s chairman.
Carolyn Becker, a spokeswoman for the California Lottery, also commented on the award. “I had the pleasure of speaking with Rosemary on the phone following her win, and I can tell you with certainty how grateful she is and how happy she is to have won this money and to have supported public schools,” she concluded.
In Brazil there is still time
Even though the value of the prizes is not comparable, in Brazil there is still time to become a millionaire playing the lottery. The first special Caixa Lottery contest of 2025, the Easter Double, began betting this Monday (17). According to the bank, the prize for contest number 2797 is estimated at R$30 million.
The draw will take place on April 19, the Saturday before Easter Sunday. Bets can be made at lottery outlets across the country, on the Loterias da Caixa portal and the Loterias Caixa app.
