A Brazilian who lives in Malden, Massachusetts, won a prize of US$1 million (about R$5.6 million) when he bought a scratch-off ticket from a lottery in the United States.

Ailton Ferreira, the lucky winner, purchased a scratch card called “Bônus 50X” in a store located in Everett, a city close to Malden. The ticket cost around R$25.

On August 23, Ailton claimed his prize with the Massachusetts State Lottery. To receive the full prize of 1 million dollars, he would have to opt for annual installments.

Therefore, he preferred a single payment of US$650,000, before taxes, an amount that, in Brazilian currency, is equivalent to approximately R$3.7 million.

The prize was a surprise for Ailton, who now joins the select group of big lottery winners. According to employees at the store where the Brazilian bought the ticket, Ailton plans to buy a house and pay for his son’s college education.
