A resident of Pennsylvania, in the United States, won a record prize of R$1.1 billion in the American Powerball lottery. The draw took place last Monday, August 13th. The winning numbers were 09-22-57-67-68-14.

Unlike Brazilian lotteries, Powerball offers two options for paying the prize. The winner can choose to make an immediate payment of R$573 million or receive the total amount in installments over 30 years.

This is the first Powerball winner since July, when an Ohio resident also won a significant prize.

In the last edition, in addition to the big winner, 346,939 people got at least a dozen right. Among these, eight cards won prizes of US$50,000 each, and two cards won US$150,000.

About the Powerball lottery

Powerball is an iconic lottery in the United States, created in 1992, that offers players the chance to become millionaires. With tickets sold in 45 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Powerball raised $32 billion for public programs.

The draws take place three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Therefore, players choose five numbers between 1 and 69, plus an additional number, the Powerball, between 1 and 26.

However, the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. Thus, the winners of the main prize can choose to receive an annuity in 30 installments over 29 years, or a single payment.

Additionally, the lottery offers additional features such as Power Play, which multiplies non-jackpot prizes, and Double Play, which gives players a second chance to win.
