In the last five years, the sports that brought the most Olympic medals to Brazil were also those that received the most lottery resources. The consultancy Sports Value revealed that between 2019 and 2023, volleyball, judo and gymnastics led in terms of financing, totaling approximately R$140 million.

Thus, volleyball received the largest contribution, totaling R$54.6 million. Judo received R$47.6 million, and gymnastics, R$37.7 million. These investments drive the success and development of these modalities in international competitions.

In addition to these sports, other sports also received significant financial support. Athletics, boxing, canoeing, horse riding, taekwondo and skateboarding received support during the period, promoting advances and improvements in their practices.

On the other hand, school sports faces a challenging situation. Since 2020, there has been no transfer of resources to this area. University sports got a boost in 2023, receiving R$9.8 million, after two years without funding.

Current legislation determines that 2% of the total collected by lotteries be allocated to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB). Of these resources, 85% remain with the COB and 15% are transferred to the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB).

These data highlight the importance of financing for the growth and success of sports in Brazil, especially those that bring international recognition. The continuity of these investments is crucial to maintaining and increasing the performance of Brazilian athletes.

Lottery investments targeted at sports

Investments directed to sports such as volleyball, judo and gymnastics show the effectiveness of directing lottery resources to sports that already show good results. These modalities not only bring medals, but also inspire new generations to practice sports and strive for excellence.

However, the lack of resources for school sports is worrying. It is in schools that many athletes begin their journey. The lack of investment in this area can compromise the discovery and development of new talents.

Support for university sports in 2023, after two years without funding, represents a positive step. However, there is still much to be done to ensure that all stages of sports training receive the necessary support.

To date, Brazil has won 13 medals at the Paris Olympics, with two golds, five silvers and six bronzes.
