The Argentine Congress must analyze a bill that expands control over online betting and toughens measures against illegal platforms. The proposal, presented by President Javier Milei, treats betting addiction as a public health issue and comes amid the growth of this market in the country.
How the project intends to combat illegal betting
The initiative responds to increased access to betting through smartphones and payment applications. Data cited by the government indicates that more than one in four high school students placed bets with real money in the last year, with online platforms predominating.
The text proposes a strategy based on inspection, prevention, awareness and punishment. The main focus is on unauthorized operators and the structure that allows these platforms to operate.
Stricter penalties and rules for advertising
The project provides for sentences of up to six years in prison for those responsible for illegal betting sites. Furthermore, companies or people who provide support to these operations, through payments, advertising or technical services, may receive fines.
The proposal also tightens disclosure rules. Advertising from unlicensed platforms would be banned in all media, including social media. Authorized operators would be subject to more rigorous monitoring.
Under the new rules, advertising campaigns will not be able to target content at young people or associate betting with wealth, social success or an inspiring lifestyle. The text also prohibits references to alcohol and tobacco in promotional actions related to the sector.
What public health measures are planned
The project expands the participation of public bodies in tackling the problem. Telecommunications authorities would be responsible for blocking illegal websites, while the Central Bank would act to interrupt financial transactions linked to unregistered operators.
Furthermore, financial institutions would have to implement more rigorous age verification mechanisms in betting-related operations.
In the health area, the proposal foresees educational campaigns in schools, awareness raising actions and data collection on the advancement of compulsive gambling. The government also intends to increase resources allocated to treatment and support programs.
Although it strengthens national action, the project maintains the Argentine regulatory model, in which the provinces preserve competences over the sector. The proposal seeks to expand coordination between different jurisdictions given the digital nature of betting platforms, which often operate beyond regional limits.
