Senator Izalci Lucas (PL-DF) defended this Tuesday (27) the extension of the work of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Sports Betting (Bets CPI). During a speech in the Plenary, the parliamentarian argued that the current deadline does not allow for hearing all those summoned.

Among the pending testimonies is that of digital influencer Luan Kovarik, known as Jon Vlogs. According to the senator, Luan released a video containing accusations against the President of the Republic. The influencer is currently out of the country and did not appear for the testimony scheduled for Tuesday.

The Bets CPI has already been extended by 45 days. The work is scheduled to end on June 14. However, Izalci Lucas states that the additional period is essential to properly prepare the final report.

The senator stated: “I hope there is common sense here and that we can approve the request to postpone this CPI, because we still need to hear from some people in order to conclude the report. If the objective, in fact, is to investigate and improve the legislation, we will need a little more time.”

Criticism of the increase in IOF

In addition, the parliamentarian expressed dissatisfaction with the adjustment of the Financial Transactions Tax (IOF) rate implemented by the government. Consequently, Izalci Lucas filed a request with the Economic Affairs Committee to summon the Minister of Treasury, Fernando Haddad.

The senator claims that the increase violates the principle of annuality established in the Federal Constitution. Furthermore, he reported that the Liberal Party filed a Legislative Decree Bill seeking to nullify the effects of the measure. A lawsuit is also underway on the issue.

The Bets CPI investigates irregularities in the online sports betting market. The commission’s work seeks to identify possible crimes and propose improvements to current legislation. Therefore, the proper conclusion of the investigations depends on the hearing of all witnesses called.
