The president of the Central Bank (BC), Gabriel Galípolo, will be present at the Bets CPI, at the next meeting of the commission, on Tuesday (8). On the agenda, there are topics such as the supervision of financial transactions of bookmakers and the evaluation of the economic impact of betting on the financial system.
The invitation to Galípolo meets a request (REQ 396) from the chairman of the CPI, Senator Dr. Hiran (PP-RR). According to Hiran, Galípolo’s presence is important since it is essential to discuss the role of the Central Bank in regulating the financial system.
The senator expects the institution to provide relevant information on the ability to track irregular transactions and the possibility of implementing specific rules for transfers of resources involving the online gaming sector.
Furthermore, the aim is also for it to provide clarification on the assessment of the economic impact of betting on the financial system.
Senator Hiran, chairman of the committee, reiterates the importance of Galípolo’s presence. “The hearing of the President of the Central Bank of Brazil is essential for this CPI to obtain crucial information to fulfill its objective, contributing to the preparation of a conclusive report that reflects the reality of the facts,” says the senator.
Bets CPI and its responsibilities
The Bets CPI was installed on November 12, 2024 to investigate the influence of online betting on the budget of Brazilian families. As well as the possible association with criminal organizations. Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS) is the rapporteur.
The government categorizes these as “fixed-odds bets”, which refer to online sports betting (so-called bets), which are already regulated. While online games that resemble casinos still require regulation.
The “fixed-odds” is the one that allows the bettor to know in advance how many times more he will receive on the amount bet, if he wins.
The result of a CPI may include, among others, proposals for changes in legislation and the sending of investigations to the competent bodies to hold the accused criminally responsible.
