In its first meeting of the year, the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) of Bets will make important decisions. Specifically, the committee will decide on the breaking of banking and tax secrecy of 71 of the 78 online betting companies authorized by the Federal Government. The meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday (11), at 11 am.
Senator Marcos Rogério (PL-RO) presented 97 requests in early December, which include requests to the Financial Activities Control Council (Coaf) to forward financial intelligence reports (RIFs) on bets, from January 1, 2020 to December 10, 2024.
In addition, 11 other requests summon authorities from the Central Bank, the Federal Police, representatives of betting companies and payment institutions. The summons makes attendance mandatory, reinforcing the seriousness of the process.
Before the votes, the board will hear from the Special Secretary of the Federal Revenue, Robinson Sakiyama Barreirinhas, invited as an expert to collaborate with the investigations.
According to Senator Izalci Lucas (PL-DF), who authorized the invitation, the betting sector is still awaiting regulation to prevent tax evasion. “Current legislation does not clearly specify how prizes should be taxed, which opens up loopholes for tax evasion,” the document states.
Barreirinhas has already contributed to a similar topic in the CPI on Match-Fixing and Sports Betting, in September 2024.
About the Bets CPI
The Bets CPI began its work on November 12, with the aim of investigating the impact of digital betting on the financial health of Brazilians and investigating possible illicit activities. The committee elected Senator Dr. Hiran (PP-RR) as president and Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS) assumed the reporting role.
The outcome of the CPI may include proposals for changes to legislation and referrals for criminal liability for those involved in irregularities. The investigation reinforces the importance of regulatory clarity to avoid financial losses and ensure transparency in the sector.
