Launch of the regulated market in Brazil

January 1, 2025 represented the official launch of the regulated sports betting and online gaming market in Brazil. Bookmakers need to follow several rules, such as using the “.bet.br” domain.

According to the government, the properly regulated segment will facilitate the correction of “structural problems” and the reduction of risks associated with betting.

Among the rules that came into force in the national territory are:

  • Prohibition of credit for online betting;
  • Requirement for bettors to be identified by CPF;
  • Control of financial flows;
  • Mandatory facial recognition;
  • Encouraging responsible gaming.

In addition, betting companies must also act in accordance with Brazilian laws and respect standards relating to the prevention of money laundering, financial security and safe gaming practices.

It is worth remembering that the legalization of the sector took place in December 2018 under Michel Temer’s government. While President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned the law that regulates the online betting market in Brazil in December 2023.
