The Gambling Commission (UKGC) recently announced significant changes. These measures aim to increase consumer control over betting deposit limits in the UK.
The new rules will come into force on October 31, 2025. From this date, all gaming companies must ask their customers to set a financial limit before making their first deposit.
Tim Miller, Executive Director of the Commission, said: “These changes illustrate our commitment to ensuring that gaming is fair and open, improving consumer empowerment and choice.”
The changes will also make it easier to review and modify these limits at any time. Consequently, customers will be able to better manage their online gaming activities.
Additionally, businesses will be required to remind consumers every six months to review their account and transaction information. This will allow users to consider changing existing limits or setting new ones.
Another important change concerns the protection of customer funds. Operators will be required to clearly set out in their terms and conditions how funds are protected in the event of insolvency.
These new rules are in line with the 2023 White Paper, “High stakes: gambling reform for the digital age”. They represent an important step in regulating the gaming sector in the UK.
The UKGC also announced the removal of the current requirement for operators to make annual financial contributions to research, prevention and treatment organisations. This change will occur with the introduction of the government’s statutory tax, scheduled for April 6, 2025.
In conclusion, these changes demonstrate the UKGC’s commitment to promoting a safer and more transparent gaming environment for British consumers.
