The CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) which investigates betting sites, known as “bets”, will resume its activities in February. Senators will meet every Tuesday at 10 am. Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS), rapporteur for the CPI das Bets, confirmed the information during an interview with radio Morena FM (MS).

The 130-day commission is investigating connections between online betting companies and criminal money laundering organizations. Therefore, the impact of digital influencers on promoting these activities will also be analyzed.

Soraya Thronicke says betting is a matter of public health

Senator Soraya Thronicke highlighted that online betting represents a public health issue. “The reports we have received are shocking. People, unfortunately, are trying to kill themselves. Hospitalization for this type of addiction costs around 15 thousand a month and is a silent addiction, very different from drinking or drug addiction” , he stated.

The senator classified the problem as “a true pandemic”. Testimonies received reinforce the urgency of stricter supervision in the online betting sector.

But, despite the relevance of the topic, the CPI faces obstacles within the National Congress. According to Soraya Thronicke, there is a “very strong opposing force” trying to shut down the commission’s work.

Political resistance represents a significant challenge, especially given the breadth of the investigations. Thus, among the names that may be called to testify are:

  • Betting site owners
  • Digital influencers
  • Singers hired for promotion
  • Even the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Ednaldo Rodrigues.

The next steps for CPI das Bets

Soraya Thronicke emphasized that the objective of the CPI das Bets is to deliver a detailed report to the competent authorities. “We finish a CPI by delivering a report. Therefore, we do not judge, we indict the people who should be indicted”, he explained.

The final report, if approved, should bring important steps to combat the irregularities identified. But the expectation is that the discussions will contribute to more efficient regulation and the protection of consumers, many of whom are in vulnerable situations.

Therefore, with this, the debate around online betting remains a central topic in the Brazilian political and social scenario. Thus, the resumption of the CPI promises to reveal new developments and reinforce the need for effective measures to regulate the sector.
