The Prizes and Betting Secretariat of the Ministry of Treasury decided to ban both betting on games and advertising by betting companies, known as bets, during the São Paulo Junior Football Cup, popularly called Copinha. This is the main grassroots tournament in Brazilian football.

Furthermore, the ban covers the display of betting advertisements on uniforms, signs in stadiums and broadcasts of Copinha games. The decision came after a meeting between the secretariat and Conar (National Advertising Self-Regulation Council). Therefore, the aim is to protect underage athletes, who make up the majority of tournament participants.

The sports betting market is growing rapidly in Brazil, with several 1st division clubs receiving sponsorship from companies in the sector. Law 14,790 of 2023 already imposes restrictions on advertising betting on sporting events with the presence of minors.

This measure aims to mitigate the negative effects associated with the betting phenomenon. The 55th edition of the Copa São Paulo runs until January 2025, the anniversary of the city of São Paulo.
