The online betting market in Brazil made important progress with the authorization for 71 companies to pay the grant of R$30 million. Regis Alexandre Dudena, Secretary of Prizes and Bets at the Ministry of Treasury, reports that, to date, 114 companies have requested permission to operate in this sector.

From January 1, 2025, only duly legal operators will be able to operate. During a session of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) that investigates betting, Dudena explained how the government approaches the market, highlighting the focus on control and supervision.

“So, 71 companies have already been notified by the Ministry of Treasury, and they have 30 days, from the notification, to comply with these final requirements. Of these, 16 have already paid the grant. Today we have 16 companies that have already paid a total of R$480 million in grants to the Ministry of Treasury”, stated Dudena.

Betting regularization process in Brazil

These companies received notifications since the 19th of last month, with a deadline for payment until the 18th or 19th of this month. This legalization process is crucial to ensure that all betting operators comply with the requirements set by the government.

Furthermore, from the opening of the deadline for requesting certification until its end in August, the government suspended the operations of any company that had not requested authorization. This action resulted in the removal of 5,283 illegal domains, as reported by Dudena. Bookmakers that pay for the grant will be able to operate with up to three brands for five years, as long as they use Brazilian domains with the “bet.br” extension.

Inspection measures and the future of the sector

The Ministry of Treasury continues to monitor these activities to prevent illegal practices. “From January 1st, the full number of companies operating in Brazil will be national companies incorporated in Brazil, in accordance with Brazilian legislation”, highlights Dudena, emphasizing control over partners and final beneficiaries. Inspection will use reliable data to intensify control, thus ensuring that all operations comply with the law.
