Senator Jorge Kajuru, president of the Betting CPI in the Senate, revealed in a recent interview that the Public Ministry of Goiás whistle blowing agreements with those under investigation who provided evidence about the alleged involvement of Brazilian National Team players in match-fixing.
He stated: “The Court already has all the material. It is a joint effort with the Public Ministry of Goiás”, but did not reveal the names of the athletes mentioned in the allegations.
Possible involvement of Lucas Paquetá and Luiz Henrique
Among the players called up to represent Brazil in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, only two have been mentioned in the CPI so far: midfielder Lucas Paquetá, from West Ham, and striker Luiz Henrique, from Botafogo.
The midfielder’s lawyers requested a postponement until December, given the need to prepare his defense at the English Football Association (FA), where he is already facing an investigation. The player will participate in a hearing in March next year.
On his social networks, Paquetá declared that he “continues to deny” the accusations of manipulation and is “eager to demonstrate his innocence”.
Luiz Henrique, in turn, addressed the issue after a significant victory in the Libertadores. He said: “They want to erase my shine, but I know they won’t be able to. God is with me, my family is with me and none of this is happening.”
Botafogo leaders have been working to avoid being summoned to the CPI, visiting senators in an attempt to influence their decisions. However, Spain began an investigation into the athlete’s suspected involvement based on information provided by Brazilian authorities.
Betting CPI focused on integrity in sport
This investigation is crucial to identify possible illicit practices in Brazilian football, with the Betting CPI focused on activities that compromise the integrity of competitions. The allegations promise to bring more clarity about those involved and the extent of the fraudulent schemes.
It is worth remembering that last Wednesday (30), Bruno Tolentino, uncle of player Lucas Paquetá, remained silent during his testimony at the Betting CPI in the Senate.
Supported by a habeas corpus from the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Tolentino chose not to answer the questions. Therefore, the members of the CPI are considering breaking their banking, telephone and telematic secrecy.
