The Federal Supreme Court (STF) advanced the discussion on sports betting in Brazil. To this end, a public hearing was scheduled for November 11th. Thus, for this event, 44 exhibitors will discuss the impacts of “bets”.
In this way, the hearing will bring together experts from various areas, including representatives from the Central Bank, gaming entities, football clubs and mental health professionals.
STF shows diversity of participants in the hearing
Among the clubs that requested participation are Fluminense, Botafogo and Cruzeiro. However, the teams have not yet announced which representatives will attend the event.
Thus, among the exhibitors are the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) and the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR). Representatives of state lotteries, such as the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj) and the Pará State Lottery (Lottopar), will also take part in the discussion.
These institutions play a crucial role in building an environment where betting can be made in a responsible and regulated manner.
The list of participants also includes important names, such as the president of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), Bruno Dantas, and the Minister of Human Rights, Macaé Evaristo. The deputy attorney general of the Central Bank, Lucas Alves Freire, is also scheduled to present his view on the matter.
Furthermore, the STF will receive the president of the Brazilian Psychiatric Association, Antônio Geraldo da Silva. This indicates a growing concern about mental health issues related to gambling.
Concern for the most vulnerable population
Minister Luiz Fux called the hearing in response to an action by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC). In other words, the CNC wants the STF to declare Law 14,790/2023, which regulates sports betting, unconstitutional.
The confederation claims that the law could increase family debt, seriously impacting the economy and public health. Furthermore, the most vulnerable social classes would be the most affected. However, these conclusions were refuted in a demonstration by the ministry led by the vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin.
In summary, Minister Fux highlighted the importance of discussing not only the mental health of bettors, but also the economic effects of betting on commerce and the domestic economy.
