Registration for the public hearing of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) on the impacts of online betting in Brazil is open. The debate, called by minister Luiz Fux, will take place on November 11, 2024.

The audience is not restricted to class entities or public authorities, so experts from the private sector on the topic, including representatives from the bookmakers themselves, can register.

But the deadline for registration is short and goes until 7pm next Friday (18th), via an official email: [email protected].

Broad debate about online betting at the STF

The public hearing is part of the discussion on the Bets Law (Law 14,790/2023). According to Fux, the objective is not only to hear legal theses, but also to clarify issues about mental health, neurological and economic impacts of betting.

Furthermore, the discussion will address the social consequences that arise with this new regulatory framework. The event will analyze the effects of betting on human behavior, economic plans for trade and the repercussions on the domestic economy.

Experts, government bodies and civil society representatives can participate. The objective is to create a space to hear different voices and obtain a more accurate diagnosis of the situation.

The discussion is also part of the Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 7721, proposed by the National Confederation of Commerce (CNC).

This entity argues that the new legislation has boosted betting, making it popular and accessible, especially for low-income families. According to the entity, gambling addiction compromises the family budget and directly impacts commerce and consumption.

Important audience information

Minister Luiz Fux emphasized that the public hearing is essential so that the Court has “essential information” when deciding on the action. This approach seeks to ensure that the Court’s decision is legitimized, reflecting greater democratic inclusion.

The minister believes that the debate will be enriched by the diversity of opinions and experiences brought by the participants. Before registering, it is essential that interested parties review all information related to the event.
