The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luiz Fux, will promote an important debate on the regulation of sports betting in Brazil. But, before judging the action related to the Bets Law, Fux wants to hear from government and Legislative leaders.
The public hearing will take place on November 11 and will include representatives from different sectors of politics, economics and civil society.
Luiz Fux summons several authorities to a meeting about betting
The Bets Law, sanctioned in 2023, regulates the sports betting and online gaming sector in Brazil. Despite this, the government estimates that up to 600 sites have not yet been regularized with the Prizes and Betting Secretariat (SPA).
Therefore, these sites are expected to close their activities soon, raising concerns for both bettors and the economy. Thus, to enrich the debate, Luiz Fux invited government ministers, political leaders and other personalities.
Among them are:
- Fernando Haddad (Treasury)
- Nísia Trindade (Health)
- Macaé Evaristo (Human Rights and Citizenship)
- Anielle Franco (Racial Equality)
- Jorge Messias (Attorney General of the Union)
- Paulo Gonet (Attorney General of the Republic)
- Roberto Campos Neto (president of the Central Bank)
- Arthur Lira (PP-AL) – President of the Chamber of Deputies
- Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) – President of the Senate
Representatives of civil society, including entities such as:
- CNC (National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism)
- ANJL (National Association of Games and Lotteries)
The CNC is one of the organizations that question the constitutionality of the Bets Law.
The Treasury set a deadline for companies already operating in the sector to adapt to the new legislation. The deadline to request authorization to operate, under the “bet.br” seal, ended on October 1st. Therefore, the judgment by the STF will take place more than a month after the deadline established for the regularization of betting companies;
Therefore, from January 1, 2025, only companies that are in good standing will be able to operate in the Brazilian market. In short, the discussion promises to highlight important issues about the future of sports betting in Brazil and the need for balanced legislation that protects the market and consumers.
