The Rio State Lottery (Loterj) reopens, this Thursday (05), the accreditation of “bets” in its official register. This measure follows several weeks of legal battle, which led to the temporary blocking of more than a hundred betting shops that had not been registered in the state.
Therefore, accreditation will remain open for 15 days and will follow the same conditions established in 2023.
Resumption of Loterj accreditation
In 2023, the lottery created a set of rules to regulate bets, including those operating in other countries. Since then, the following betting companies have been registered:
- Apostou RJ
- Bestbet
- Caesars Sportsbook/BiG Brazil
- MarjoSports
- Rio Jogos
- Pixbet
Then, thanks to its local registration, Loterj won a court ruling in July. This decision asked the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to block 115 bookmakers in Rio that were not accredited.
But this generated complaints from some operators who stated that they could not block bets only in the state of Rio. However, in mid-August, the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region suspended the block.
Ministry of Treasury Ordinance
An ordinance from the Ministry of Treasury allows bets to adapt to regulations until December 31, 2024. According to the Rio government, Loterj will reopen its accreditation due to the “high demand” from bookmakers.
The value of the license for players in Rio is R$5 million, valid for five years.
In addition, there is a variable subsidy equivalent to 5% of the company’s monthly revenue, called Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR). Loterj was the first state lottery to legalize betting in the country.
At a national level, the regulation will only come into force in January 2025.
