The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), revealed that he will consult the leaders of the House. He wants to discuss the vote on Bill (PL) 2234/2022 next week.
This project regulates the exploitation of games and betting throughout Brazil. The proposal includes the release of casinos, bingo, video bingo, Jogo do Bicho and betting on horse races.
PT has no defined position on the Cassinos PL
Next Thursday (08), there will be a thematic debate session on the topic in the plenary. “We are going to hold this debate session, initially, this coming Thursday and, once the debate session is over, it will be ready for the Senate plenary,” stated Rodrigo Pacheco.
The Senate president plans to consult with leaders about the favorable environment for voting on the bill next week, after debates conclude.
But this is a strategy by the Evangelical Bench and part of the opposition to slow down the project. But the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) has already approved the Cassinos PL by 14 votes to 12 since June 19th.
The next step is voting in the plenary. After that, the project needs presidential sanction, as the text has already been approved in the Chamber of Deputies. Parliamentarians opposed to the project argue that it could encourage gaming addictions.
Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), government leader in the Senate, stated that the government does not yet have a defined position on the matter, although it voted in favor of the project at the CCJ. The thematic debate session aims to bring experts to enrich the discussion among senators.
Rodrigo Pacheco must also present PL for the states’ debt
In addition to the Cassinos PL, Rodrigo Pacheco mentioned the expectation of voting, next week, on the Complementary Law Project (PLP) that renegotiates the States’ debts with the Union. “We will comply with this dialogue calendar”, said Pacheco.
“My intention is that we can work on this project this week so that we can vote on Tuesday or Wednesday. It doesn’t just depend on me, but also on the rapporteur and the leaders.”
The PLP rapporteur, senator Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), is expected to speak with governors of some states before releasing the final opinion. Pacheco will also meet with governors from the North and Northeast on Wednesday, to discuss the topic. The text was written by the senator from Minas Gerais.
The two bills reflect the intense dynamics in the Senate this week. The vote on the Casinos PL, in particular, promises to generate heated debates and raise questions about the regulation of gaming and betting in the country.
With consultation with leaders and the thematic debate session, the Senate is preparing for a decisive period. The expectation is that these projects will advance, contributing to Brazil’s political and economic scenario.
